Seventy Months at Descanso Gardens

Last Monday, Chris and I celebrated our seventieth month-a-versary! Can you believe it? Just two more months until we hit our six year anniversary. For the first time, in a long while, Chris and I actually got to spend our month-a-versary together. So, we decided to check out Descanso Gardens in La Cañada Flintridge.

Descanso easily translates into “rest” in Spanish. The garden was previously owned by E. Manchester Boddy, who owned the Los Angeles Daily News. The county bought the lot in 1953 and has since then developed the property to housing a rosarium, a Japanese tea house, lilac garden, bird sanctuary and a xeriscape.

Chris and I arrived at Descanso Gardens a few minutes after 10 in the morning. The tickets cost us $9 each – could’ve been $6 but we left our student IDs at home. Keep those school IDs – student discounts are usually available at county parks/gardens! To say we went on the perfect day is an understanding. The sun was tucked away behind the clouds, and it started sprinkling halfway through our little adventure.

I recently bought the 50mm lens for my camera so we put it to good use that day! We started off at the Japanese tea house, then made our way to the Ancient Garden. In the Ancient Garden, they set it up to look like you stepped foot into a Jurassic Park movie. We strolled around until we made our way to Boddy House and then eventually to the other gardens.

As per usual, we found the cactus garden! If you’re an avid reader of the blog, you would know that I absolutely plants, especially succulents and cacti.

We also stumbled upon this little resting house. Since it’s Comic-Con season, this is probably the closest we’ll ever make it to the Game of Thrones chair.

I actually forgot my tripod at home so it was hard taking a photo of both of us in it – but we did get one sort of, not really decent shot!

Descanso Gardens is absolutely beautiful and it’s a great place to get away for the day. Chris and I are definitely planning on visiting again since we didn’t get to check out several gardens or the lake. Plus, we’re thinking of having a picnic there someday. In other news, my verdict on the 50mm lens? LOVE IT. The colors and the focus are amazing. What sucks about it is that it’s a fixed lens so I’m the one constantly stepping back to fit everything I want to in the frame; aside from that, I have nothing else negative to say!

Yay! I’m so glad the 50mm is working out so well! Isn’t it a game changer? I love how sharp it is and how much light it lets in. Doing great with the shallow depth of field shots! With the timer shot, you can try this: prop the camera to tilt a bit upwards with a rock or something under the lens. Have Chris stand where you will be and focus manually or through Live View. Set the timer and jump into the shot!

By the way, you and Chris are really good at exploring places right in our neck of the woods. I need to learn from you!

Congrats on your anniversary!! 50mm is so good and fixed lens takes a little to get used to. I used to shoot with 50mm but then I moved to a wide angle and I find it hard for go back! Pro tip, if you don’t have a tripod you can use your wallet to help the angle of the camera for a self timer 🙂

Happy 70th months to you and Chris! You’re close to the big 6 ;)! Going to Descanso Gardens was definitely the right choice. I went there on a solo walk last year to test out my DSLR. No regrets!

HAhahahahaha when I went there, I already graduated from college but had no shame in using my student discount. All of the pictures look cute! Love the shots that you’ve taken so far. Glad to hear you enjoyed your 50mm lens! I feel you about the fixed lens though. I couldn’t even fit the entire Golden Gate Bridge in one shot with my DSLR ;~;.

Congrats on your anniversary! That looks like an awesome place to spend it, gardens are the best. I also have a soft spot for succulents even though I’ve killed every single one that I’ve had 🙁 I like the new lens, the photos look great!

I think it’s made a huge difference in your photography. Your photos look so beautiful. Love all the succulents that California has. You would NEVER see them in New England!
