Asian Eatscapades

Asian cuisine is, without a doubt, my favorite. It’s easily my go to/comfort food, except on the rare occasion that I want a taco. Because I eat a lot of Asian food, I’ve decided to make a spin-off of the Foodie Files series – Asian Eatscapades! While still a great part of the foodie files, Asian Eatscapades will focus primarily on new Asian food that I try and sort of review on the blog. Recently, I visited two new Asian restaurants and wanted to share.

Stray Cat Poke and Dessert

I visited Stray Cat Poke with Nancy back in February when I was in town getting my car’s oil changed. Unfortunately, Alyse was unable to join us due to school obligations (you go, my chemist friend!). For the longest time now, Nancy and I always talk about grabbing poke when we meet up and we finally did it! We hit up this new poke place located in the heart of Downtown Pasadena.

Their poke was reasonably priced. I got the regular-sized bowl which came with two scoops of protein (salmon all the way for this girl). I got the purple rice and topped it off with some avocado (which was FREE by the way), onions, cucumbers, sesame seeds. They also offered truffle oil as a dressing for their poke which seriously blew me away. I love anything and everything truffle – truffle fries, truffle aioli, and now this?! Count me in.

After eating, Nancy decided to spit their dessert which was the taiyaki ice cream. We got the rose berry flavor and had a little bit of matcha sprinkled on it and a side of mochi. It also came with the cutest little shovel! The verdict? This place was VERY unique with their purple rice base and their rose berry ice cream is to die for. The downside? When Nancy and I were finishing up our poke bowls, we noticed one of the workers continuously glancing over our table to make sure we still had food in our bowls – pretty sure he was ready to kick us out if we didn’t! Then we found out through their Yelp page that they actually kicked out customers and apparently had a “time limit” to their indoor seating. 3/5 stars. Would probably stop by but get my food to go in the future.

Sy-Salathai

After having been overstaffed and feeling a bit under the weather at work one day, I decided to clock out early. On the drive home, I decided that pho was the best way to cure whatever it was that was making me feel sick. After convincing Chris that we should get some pho, we found Sy-Salathai through Yelp. Sy-Salathai is a local Thai/Lao restaurant in the heart of the Central Valley. It had decent reviews on Yelp and after browsing through menu photos, we decided that the prices were decent enough.

Chris got some spicy cashew chicken with sticky rice (surprise, surprise) and I settled for their special pho. The portions were really good for being priced at $8. Their food was really good and the service wasn’t too bad either! We also found out towards the end of our meal that the restaurant serves pre-packed chicken & rice for $2 for those on the run. The verdict? We loved it here! The location of the restaurant isn’t the greatest but the food really makes up for it. This place proved to be a better dining experience than the Thai restaurant we ate during Valentine’s week. Already looking forward to ordering other items off their menu!

Those okra makes me want to have some today! Also how cute is ‘Stray Cat’ as a restaurant’s name, what an idea 🙂 too bad about the time limit though, it’s quite ridiculous really.

If I lived there, I’d probably go to the Thai place. The pho looks good makes me want to have it for lunch!

Yum I Love poke bowls and this place sounds so cute with the bowls and their ice cream. I would hate it too if I was constantly being watched and felt rushed. Such a cute spot just even for their ice cream! xoxo, Christine

Eatscapades are my favourite kind of escapades, and Asian eatscapades are even better! // Was there a long line at Stray Cat? I get why restauranteurs might not want people hanging around for too long, but if that makes current customers feel uncomfortable, then something’s gotta change! At least both the poke and dessert look sooo good! // Pho is a comfort food for quite a few of my friends, especially when they’re sick! Now that I think about it… I haven’t had pho in awhile… Now I’m craving it… -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

YASSS I love the name of this series! Eatscapades is a genius play on words. I really appreciate the purple rice for some reason. It’s something I never had before and YASSS FREE AVOCADO! I hate it when places charge a dollar more for a small scoop of avocado. Like really? The staff was rude af for staring us down tho.

Ooooho the food at Sy-Salathai looks delicious! Pho is life, girl! For the price you paid, the portion size sounds like a good deal! Glad you had a better experience here. Looks like Sy-Salathai can take your money vs that other Thai place. Shoot, you make me want to go out and get some Thai food XD. Pad see ew, anyone?

I’ve never had poke before but it looks so yummy. I haven’t had pho either, guess I have to change that soon haha. I wouldn’t like to eat at a place where someone is constantly looking over my shoulder, how stressful! xx

That ice cream looks EPIC! I need some of that in my life ASAP. If you ever come to Boulder you have to hit up Chez Thuy. Best Vietnamese food of your LIFE! Well… unless you go to Vietnam. They probably do it better haha.
    Now I’m hungry!

After seeing all these amazing dishes now I’m hungry! I wish that there would be more places with Asian Food in Europe but instead all I can see is Pizza and Pasta but usually it’s a disgusting Pasta (or maybe my standards are too high after studying Italian studies where half of my time we spent on eating and cooking traditional food).

Ahhh, these two places look like such a wonderful place to have your Asian food fix 😉 It’s weird but my comfort food is always Italian food – my parents make Filipino food everyday but whenever I need “comfort food” I always turn to PASTA LOL. xD

I haven’t had Asian food for a while and I’m planning to eat out this week sooOOoooo *inspired*

I wish I lived closer so that I could actually try all these places! A time limit is a bit ridiculous though, so much about a relaxed meal aha. I would still go for the pink rice and free avocado though! I’m currently on a mission to change my mum’s opinion about Asian food – the options aren’t great in my small home town so every time she comes to London I take her to a really good Asian restaurant. xx

Pho is the absolute bomb.com when you’re sick! Asian food is my absolute favorite as well. The biggest downside of living in Ohio (besides the weather) is that there aren’t nearly as many Asian places to try as there are in Cali! There’s like .01% as many. What a bummer.
