Bubbs Creek Trail Hike

A while back, my coworkers (Fred, Thuan) and I planned to do a hike to Mist Falls in the heart of Kings Canyon National Park. Since the rain was very good last year, the falls have been very full, according to reviews of the trail on AllTrails. Chris and I were picked up by Fred and Thuan on what seemed to be a cool Sunday morning. On the drive to the park, we stopped by for breakfast at Sierra Inn, located off the US-180.

Along the way, we stopped by Roaring Falls which was a little park-and-see attraction.

The drive to Road’s End, which is basically where the trailheads are located was horrible. The roads were winding and tiny, and it took a two hours to get there. By the time we were at the trailhead, I felt miserable and the heat was getting to me. Sadly, we decided not to do the hike to Mist Falls since it was a 8.1 hike out and back; instead, we did a shorter hike to Bubbs Creek Trail, which was approximately 3 miles roundtrip. However, according to AllTrails, the actual Bubbs Creek takes 24.6 miles so the trailhead sign may have been lying, ha.

While I enjoyed the company, this hike fell short of expectations for me. I was disappointed in myself for not pushing through to see the falls, but the long drive along with the heat really put me in mood. It’s moments like these where I have to remind myself that there is always beauty in everything – with that in mind, I still got to enjoy the view as well as playing in the cold water. I should also mention, the water in the park is without a doubt the cleanest water I have ever seen. The water actually flows into the Kings River, which runs for a total of 133 miles, draining from the Sierra Nevada mountain ranges.

On the drive back, we stopped by a lodge/campground and made use of the clean restrooms and stocked up on snacks for the drive back. While we were walking back to the parking lot, we noticed some beach chairs laid out by the side so we walked over and spent a few minutes just enjoying the sound and view of the river. I saw this as a perfect opportunity to run back in and purchase an ice cream cone.

Still disappointed with the lack of Mist Falls pictures but still proud of myself for coming out in this hot weather and making the most of it. Until the next adventure!

Living in Central California is perfect because of the easy access to the parks!! It is great that we got a lot of rain last year, the waters are REALLY flowing! It is a bummer that you didn’t see the falls but I get you. You and Chris are so cute!! It is good that there are clean restrooms around. BIG plus to any nature visits, hehe. Glad you had fun!!

Oh wow – this scenery is so beautiful! Don’t beat yourself up for not having done the other hike – if you pushed through you may not have enjoyed it or needed to turn back anyway! It’s better to listen to your body and just make the most of the day with something alternative.

I know you’re disappointed that you didn’t get to those falls shots but the photos you did get are absolutely beautiful. Your posts never fail to blow me away with the beautiful scenery. But I totally get being in that kinda mood with the long drive and the heat. I hope the next one is more enjoyable for you! x

I’m not a hiking fan but I honestly think if I lived somewhere like this that I could become a convert. Your photos are just beautiful, Eena. And the fact that you had a wonderful time is far more important than pushing yourself too. And yay for ice cream opportunities! X

It’s perfect weather right now to do some hiking here but I’m so lazy haha. Still kinda wish for some warm weather (but will probably regret is because it’s always with humidity haha). Sorry about the Mist Falls shots but the pics you took here of Bubbs Creek looks gorgeous!! Look at that water! Thanks for sharing Eena!

Looks like a lovey hike. I’ve had similar experiences of not really knowing the distance between two markers on a trail, as difference sources cite different distances. Guess that’s one of the “joys” of hiking.
It’s tempting to stretch yourself and see as much as you can in a day, but it’s good to be precautious; the heat can really get to you and you certainly don’t want to get dehydrated several miles out in the wilderness.
    Thanks for sharing your pictures!

The Roaring Falls look stunning but it’s a shame you felt a bit let down by the hike and general experience. I wish we had more trails around here that I could do!

I think that not pushing yourself into the longer hike in the heat was probably a wise choice – as much as you are disappointed to have missed the falls, they will be there another time, and often our gut instinct is right and it’s best to listen, especially in nature and with hiking. Every single hiking disaster story contains “and I knew something wasn’t quite right but I decided to push through anyway”.

So jealous of all the beautiful hikes you get to go on!
