Oceano Dunes

Back in August, Chris and I headed off to Santa Maria/Pismo Beach/Oceano to spend some time with family. We arrived Friday night and decided to explore the little town of Santa Maria. We arrived rather late in the afternoon, so we scrambled to find a good restaurant when most places were to beginning to close their doors for the day.

We stumbled upon Ichiban Japanese Restaurant after the Korean BBQ place we found was packed and had a 40-minute waiting time. And it was great that we did!

Ichiban Japanese Restaurant had AMAZING dinner combinations. I ordered the chicken katsu dinner which came with miso soup, cucumber salad, assorted tempura, gyoza and rice. The servings were HUGE and the service was amazing – the wait staff made you feel so at home and treated you like family. I highly recommend this place should you find yourself in the area.

The following day, we got up early and headed to Oceano, CA where the Oceano Dunes were located. If you’ve seen Mad Max: Fury Road, this is what going to the dunes felt like… except with an ocean right nearby. We found a rental place, checked in and got dropped off at the ATV area!

The day was rather gloomy so it made everything better. Riding ATVs is so much fun – except when your ATV gets stuck uphill (which happened quite often). And as I quote Mad Max, GASOOOOLIIIIIINE!

This quick little weekend trip was a lot of fun. After we wrapped up our ATV riding session, we grabbed some bacon-wrapped (“big niΓ±o”) hotdogs at this hotdog truck. It was a great way to end a good day! Afterwards, Chris and I had to leave because I had work the following day. Hopefully we get to come back soon!

Oooh, I’ve seen a lot of Ichiban restaurants, I wonder if they’re run by the same group of owners. Your katsu dinner looks delicious!! I haven’t been to Oceano before and everyone looks so cool riding on those ATV’s!! I need to get my butt out there to try it out myself, hehe. Ohoohohoho I am a sucker for anything bacon-wrapped. Glad you had lots of fun!!!

Sounds like a lovely trip! You kind of lost me after the chicken katsu dinner though! Lol I’m a food lover, and I have a tender spot for Asian cuisine! I live on the other side of the planet, so I won’t be near that area any time soon, but I’ll see if I could find a similar meal in one of the Japanese restaurants here. xD

Looks like lots of fun! I’ve heard that Ichiban is good but I haven’t got the chance to eat there yet.

Riding an ATV looks so fun! I had no idea you could do that on a beach, it gives me ideas for my next vacation!

This looks like so much fun! I love your comparison to Mad Max, because it’s so true that some of the California dunes look very very similar to that movie haha. Yay for more authentic Japanese restaurants! Every time I find one I’m over the moon because I miss Japanese food so much sometimes, so it’s great to find a restaurant that serves it up authentic style. πŸ™‚

That looks like so much fun! I’ve been on a four wheeler once, and almost fell off because of how fast they took off. The food looks delicious too! Glad you had a good time. Short weekend getaways are the best.

Looks like such a great little trip and hopefully you’ll be able to return soon! I’ve never experienced driving a ATV but it’s like the kind of adventurous / outdoorsy activity I really want to challenge myself to one day soon. I looove Japanese food as well so this spot sounds great and good value for money is always a plus too. Thanks for sharing!!

Wow the servings are huge! I always appreciate a place that doesn’t skimp out on their plating :3 // I’ve never ridden an ATV before, but I have been in a sort of 4-person sand dune buggy before. I was just a passenger; I don’t think I could have maneuvered my way through the dunes! Looks like you had such a great time at the beach πŸ™‚ -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s
