Weekend in Union City

During Easter weekend, my aunt invited us to her place in Union City, CA to celebrate her birthday, as well as, to get together for Easter. My uncle from the Philippines is currently in town so it was also a reunion for my dad and his siblings. We spent the entire weekend with good company, amazing karaoke skills and great food (just like we did the year before).

Hunan Cuisine

We arrived around 5pm to find all the adults out playing badminton. When they arrived, we headed straight to Hunan Cuisine which was part restaurant and part karaoke. We got a room for 15 people and just ordered skewer after skewer throughout the night. We finished our karaoke session close to midnight.

YAYOI

The next day, following my cousin’s basketball tournament, we went spent the day in Palo Alto. We had lunch at Yayoi which happens to be THE fanciest Japanese restaurant I’ve ever stepped foot in. Basically, the concept of the restaurant is serving Teishoku set meals (miso soup, the main dish, a vegetable side and pickles). The coolest part was that every table had an iPad attached to the wall next to it and you order everything through there – including beverages! The service was really great as well. Everything came out at a reasonable amount of time and everything tasted amazing. I ordered the Mix Toji Teishoku which had pork cutlet, fried shrimp and sukiyaki beef simmered in sauce and egg *drools*

Blue Bottle Coffee

My other uncle really enjoys stopping by coffee shops – a lot. After lunch at Yayoi, he insisted that we stop by Blue Bottle Coffee and hang out for a bit. I’m not a huge coffee drinker but I’ll enjoy a latte here and there (especially if it’s a green tea latte). Their menu had a limited selection to pick from and they didn’t have green tea, unfortunately. I settled for an affogato. The aesthetics of this place was good but their coffee didn’t win me over.

Philz Coffee + everything in between

After Blue Bottle, we headed back to my aunt’s house. When I thought I could finally catch a break, I volunteered to accompany both of my aunts and uncle to buy some things needed for dinner. What I envisioned to be a 30-minute errand run progressed into a 3 hour drive around the city -buying seafood, buying sauce for said seafood, buying water, ordering and picking up some Indian food from Pakwan Restaurant, stopping by for some coffee at Philz. Nevertheless, the joy ride was rather entertaining.

On Sunday, we stopped by Philz Coffee again and enjoyed each other’s company. I fell in love with their iced mint mojito and it’s definitely better than what Starbucks has to offer (except the green tea latte is still the best, ok). Afterwards, I went with my parents to stop by church and then it was time go home.

That weekend went by too fast. My family may be loud and overwhelming (at times), but being able to spend time together despite all our busy schedules is always a blessing. Until the next family gathering!

It’s so cool that you did a family road trip to Union City. I love how you guys are so family-oriented. Oh man, you already got me at skewers! Wowowo Yayoi looks so fancy. It’s great that restaurants are embracing technology and it’s easier than flagging down waiters???

I am hungry looking at the sushi.

So cool that you got to check out coffee shops too. But are they better than Roasting? JK. I still haven’t been to Philz yet. Glad you enjoyed your time out there! :)!

I found you from Pauline’s blog. πŸ˜… Good to see you spent some time in the Bay Area. I *actually* live in Union City, so I was surprised to see you mentioned it. We’re an underrated part of the Bay Area but I still love this little suburb. 😊

I like both Blue Bottle Coffee and Philz Coffee, but I’m more of a Philz gal. The new branch over there in Fremont (where you guys went) is really close to my workplace, so I often would stop by there for coffee before I head home. I’ve passed by Yayoi many times in the past but never actually dined in there. πŸ˜…

Good to see you highlighted an area of the Bay Area that isn’t stereotypical “Silicon Valley.” Being a home resident, this place has a lot more to offer that needs to be explored. I recommend hiking up Mission Peak in Fremont, not just for the “point peak,” but to take a peek at the mysterious “East Bay Wall” ancient (?) rock wall that still stands there. 😊

Oh those skewers and sushi have made me so hungry now, I think a trip to Wagamamas is on the cards very soon, haha. And that iced mint mojito sounds lovely too, I’ve never tried one of those but what a perfect summer drink. Thank you so much for sharing what was obviously a wonderful family weekend! x

First of all, I just want to say that I love your blog because it’s simple and your posts are amazing! πŸ’›

I’m grateful to finally be back from my hiatus and one of the blogs that I checked first was yours. Are you Filipino also? Because you mentioned that you have an uncle from the Philippines. Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed your weekend in Union City! I hope I could go there someday. I need to work on my passport first though.

Looks like you had a great time surrounded by awesome company <3 Haha, I totally laughed at "amazing karaoke skills" because that sounds SO FILIPINO – totally what we all do here as well whenever relatives are around. Ah, Philippines. haha!

We usually have family gatherings at home -rather than go out to eat/drink! I'll have to change that in the next family gathering, inspired by this post πŸ˜‰

I wish we had cool places like that here. These places sound so amazing. Especially the Japanese restaurant! I love when you can order via touch screen. We have Sheetz here (just a gas station/fast food place) but they have touch screens that you order your food on, and I love that.
